Help For Yourself

Get help now.

Whether you experienced interpersonal violence in your childhood, several years or months ago, or last night, at UNC-Chapel Hill, we can help. What kind of help you choose is up to you.Photo of hands

Here are some options to consider:

  • Seek medical attention at Campus Health Services or UNC Hospitals, especially if you’ve experienced a physical or sexual assault recently
  • Seek confidential counseling at Counseling and Psychological Services to help you cope with the trauma
  • Contact the University Ombuds Office to talk in confidence about any issue, problem, or dispute
  • Seek professional help through hotlines:
Local: Compass Center for Women and Families (formerly the Family Violence Prevention Center) or Orange County Rape Crisis Center Center
National: National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1.800.799.SAFE
    National Sexual Assault Hotline, 1.800.656.HOPE,
    National Sexual Assault Online Hotline
    Stalking Resource Center
  • Review international resources and contacting the Dean of Students and/or Study Abroad at UNC if you experience interpersonal violence while studying abroad.
  • Contact the Office of the Dean of Students for help with considering your options, reporting the incident, or assistance with safe housing, no-contact orders, or your academics
  • Reach out to the LGBTQ Center or Project Rainbow Net for support if you’ve been assaulted, abused or stalked and are concerned about coming forward because of your sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression (or that of the person who hurt you)
  • Review resources and policies at the UNCParenting website if you have children
  • Seek help if you’re having suicidal thoughts by calling Hopeline NC at 919.231.4525
  • Report the incident to the University and/or to law enforcement (call 911 in most areas). If you have questions about the criminal justice process, talking with someone on the National Sexual Assault Hotline, 1.800.656.HOPE or National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1.800.799.SAFE, can help
  • Contact a HAVEN ally (look for their placard on office doors, residence hall room doors, laptops, etc.) to help you consider which of these options you want to pursue
  • Learn more about interpersonal violence
